The trick fountains are the reason to come: the prince’s table with its one dry seat, the grottoes with hidden jets, the crown on a column of water, the mechanical theatre of 163 figures from 1750 and the Altemps fountain with its star pond, walked with the audio guide on your own phone in about 50 minutes. The palace exhibition, GrandDelight (SchauLust in German), fills Solari’s rooms with the world of Markus Sittikus, interactive and about 30 minutes with the audio guide. There is no bedroom to look for: the villa was for the day. Photography is allowed and welcome. The palace is the one part of the visit that is not wheelchair accessible; the park and the fountains are.
The folk museum in the Monatsschlössl is up the hill above the park, in the small yellow lodge said to have been built in a month in 1615: traditional furniture, masks and theatre. Free, in the park
The Sound of Music gazebo stands near the park entrance. It was moved here from Schloss Leopoldskron after filming and is locked, so the visit is a photograph from the path. What was filmed where. The Stone Theatre is a rock stage cut into the hillside and used from 1617. The adventure playground is large and is where families lose the afternoon. Hellbrunner Allee, the old princely avenue, runs straight and tree-lined for about five kilometres to the Nonntal and is the cycling route in. The park is about 60 hectares, part landscaped and part natural biotope, and dogs are welcome on a leash.
Salzburg Zoo is next door in the palace grounds, five minutes on foot from the palace, on a separate ticket; the Salzburg Card covers it along with the Hellbrunn admission and bus 25, which is the simplest way to do both in a day. The card’s full list.
In what order
Fountains first, because they are the part with a clock and are quietest at opening; the palace second; then out into the park to the gazebo and, if the legs allow, up to the Monatsschlössl and the Stone Theatre. The park stays open until 21:00, long after the ticket office. How long each part takes.
